Have you ever wondered why your gran always had a wooden spoon on top of a pot when water was boiling?
It’s because she knows that leaving a wooden spoon on top of a pot of boiling water can stop the bubbly mess of pasta, rice or potato water boiling over the top of the pot and creating a great big mess on the top of the stove. It does this by breaking the surface tension of the steam bubbles causing the liquid to fall back into the pot.
